Reasons for joining MacDermid
MacDermid Performance Solutions first appealed to me because of its great success in Japan for the past 50 years and because it has further room for strong growth due to its technology and well-known reputation in the market. Since I joined the company in 2013, the U.S. headquarters along has made Japan a strategic priority and committed to devoting more resources to this country. Unlike the majority of other Western companies, MacDermid owns land in Japan and the company-owned facility gives us the freedom and flexibility to continue to grow. 10 years after joining the company, our global headquarters in the U.S. announced the opening of a 2nd facility in Japan – with the satellite laboratory in Nagoya complementing our existing infrastructure in Hiratsuka.
My job and responsibilities
As General Manager of both the MacDermid Enthone Industrial Solutions business and Circuitry Solutions business for MacDermid Alpha in Japan, I wear many hats and have very varied work. In my sales role, there’s never a dull moment as I meet with CEOs, business owners and executives at Japanese companies -– whether they are existing clients or prospective customers. Another day might find me interviewing candidates for employment, and I interact with talent from all stages of life -– from ambitious college seniors to industry veterans with decades of experience under their belts. As MacDermid’s vision extends well beyond the horizon, I’m also deeply involved in developing the long-term strategy for Japan, targeting 2035 and beyond.
What I love about my job
MacDermid is advantaged by customers that are not restricted to just one industry — and this diverse business allows me to meet with people in a variety of industries. And if the economic climate isn’t strong in a certain industry in a given year, we’re able to devote our resources to customers in other industries that are prospering — thus, happily, minimizing our risk exposure. Similarly, our Japanese business isn’t limited to one country, and our global infrastructure allows us to follow Japanese customers to Mexico, to Vietnam or to wherever they’ve transplanted. Demonstrating our global footprint, MacDermid Performance Solutions currently has five Japanese employees living in China / Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the U.S.
Challenges that I would like to tackle in the future
One of my greatest challenges is keeping up with the explosive growth of our business and commensurately staffing it with key talent. As the available pool of bilingual talent is finite due to demographic conditions and other factors unique to Japan, MacDermid has several unfilled positions at junior and senior levels alike. Sourcing human capital is one of my top priorities, and we have been increasing our hiring of non-Japanese nationals. Here in Japan, our workforce is truly global –- with employees from China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, South Korea, and the U.S. Furthermore, we have 3 Japanese returnees who spent their childhood in Canada, Denmark and the U.K. Our summer internship program has been immensely popular as a way for college students to get to know our company as a potential employer.
Career advice to foreign exchange students
My advice to all foreign exchange students: Step outside your comfort zone and experience something to which you’re not accustomed. The fact that you’ve chosen to live in Japan — far away from your home country –- means that you’re already stretching your personal boundaries, and it would be still better to challenge yourself continuously. Please remember that learning does not, nor should not, stop once you receive the diploma from your university.
